We all love something vintage! Like those bell bottom jeans and mum’s old cardigan, things have a way of coming back into fashion, even furniture. The best thing about having something vintage, is if its back in fashion, you know it probably won’t ever go out of fashion. These pieces are loved and special, they can add real character and charm to your home or space.
But, before jumping onto Facebook Marketplace (don’t worry, we do it too), here are some helpful tips and tricks for sourcing vintage furniture and making sure you don’t just end up with something old!
Check the Construction.
–
Check the construction, how is the piece held together – look for quality. Open drawers and check underneath, can you see nails, glue, joins? Can you see dovetail joins or something that could have been machine made? You’re looking for craftsmanship and quality.

Look for Damage.
–
Look for damage – Unfortunately, sometimes old/antique pieces can be damaged due to time, changing ownership and just poor upkeep. Before you buy, always check for damages. Is there anything missing? Have repairs been done to the piece? Is there any strain on the joins? Even well made pieces can have a little damage however, you still want to take home a quality piece.
Check for Replacements.
–
Ideally, you’re looking for a completely original piece, that means no modern add-ons or handyman ‘fix-its’. Give every piece a thorough going over, check drawer runners, feet, handles, screws & bolts, anything that doesn’t look right probably isn’t. Ask the owner about any obvious repairs, did they repair the original handle or have they replaced it with something new. Sometimes replacements can be necessary, but it will affect the overall authenticity and of course, the price!
Look for a Name or Brand.
–
Always check for names, stamps, signatures, and labels. If someone is claiming their piece is from somewhere or by someone, then ask them how they know? Ask for documentation or provenance of the piece! Particularly check behind the piece or the underside of drawers, this is where craftsman can hide their trademarks/signatures. As best as possible, make sure you know it’s actually from France and not Grandma’s garage before you buy.
Replicas are out there.
–
There are lots of brands/companies that make a living from replica furniture, which we sometimes love! But if you’re after a really classic piece or think you have found a bargain, make sure you really do your detective work and make sure it’s the real deal and not a real replica!
Know your Seller.
–
Lastly, you can get a pretty good gauge of the quality of a piece based on the seller. Are they a reputable dealer? Is it a large auction house or shop on the corner? Can they provide you with a Certificate of Antiquity (CoA)? Read customer ratings & reviews. If you’re buying online make sure you ask for extra imagery or if you can see the physical item, so you know they aren’t scamming you. The better you know the seller the better-quality piece you’re going to get.
Remember, Old doesn’t necessarily mean Vintage!
