Outdoor Entertaining in Winter

The cooler seasons always brings the vision of cuddling up with blankets by the fire…we often look indoors for this type of comfort but your outdoor entertaining space can do just the same!

The demand for designing outdoor spaces is booming, mixed with the evolution of outdoor furnishing and fabrics makes the possibilities with your outdoor space endless!

A neglected outdoor space collecting dust and leaves during the winter season isn’t a good look in your home, and with the right design and styling your outdoor spaces can prove just as popular for family and guests all year round! So we thought we’d share our tips to gearing up your outdoor space for the winter season!

Firepit / Outdoor fire

One of the best things to do outside in the winter is sit by the fire, whether that be a fireplace or better yet… a fire pit! Not only does it bring warmth, but the ambience of the light and soft crackling of the firewood instantly changes the mood of the space.  And personally, it takes a lot for me to sit out in the cold, but a warm fire is certainly a reason for me to stay – not to mention the toasty marshmallows!

Heating

If you don’t have have a fire or perhaps you are looking for more direct heating, outdoor heaters are a must!  There is such a variety of styles and types to choose from, whether it be gas or electric. Integrated heating has to be one of my favourites at the moment, simply being installed above your entertaining space making for a subtle addition that doesn’t compromise the style of your space all year round!

Adequate Seating

For what’s lacking in temperature you need to make for in comfort! Acclimatising to the cooler nights isn’t always easy, so having comfortable seating for family and friends to enjoy will make you the favourite host! Outdoor upholstered furniture is really making its mark at the moment that it could even be mistaken for indoor furniture!  Alternatively having some seat and back rest cushions made up to add to your existing outdoor furniture will do just the trick, this also means you have full control over the fabric and pattern/ colour to work with your style!

Cosy Textures

You’ve got to make it appealing and inviting!!! Convincing your family and friends to sit outside might not be the easiest but styling with cosy textures will make the space look just that little bit more inviting!  Outdoor fabrics have seriously advanced over recent years which means more durable fabrics without comprising on comfort! Look for fabrics that have marine vinyl and acrylic which have water and UV resistant properties, keeping your outdoor space looking good for many years.  Try layering up with cushions and throw blankets too!  There is no doubt these will come to good use…

Ambient Lighting

Now a fire will always set the ambience of the space, but you can achieve just the same warm and cosy feel to your outdoor space with lighting.  Just like furniture, outdoor lighting is taking off too!  I’m especially loving all the outdoor floor lanterns that are available, the addition of low level lighting is desirable for the outdoors as it doesn’t interfere with the moonlight shining down from above.
