Outdoor furnishings have come such a long way in the last decade as outdoor spaces increasingly become an extension of the indoors. Investing in a good quality outdoor rug has the ability to pull your entire outdoor space together and now with so many beautiful options on the market we really are spoilt for choice. So whether you are wanting to add additional layering to an outdoor dining setting or you are wanting to zone off your outdoor lounge there are a few things you should be aware of:
How do outdoor rugs differ from indoor rugs?
The main difference is in the materiality. Outdoor rugs are typically made from synthetic engineered materials making them ideal for outdoor spaces and withstanding the harshness of the exterior elements.
Will they fade with sunlight?
Once again it all comes down to materiality! Polyester, acrylic and polypropylene are the most common synthetic fibers that you will find in outdoor rugs. These materials are sturdy and reliable so that they can withstand the outdoor climate. There also have UV protection so no need to worry about fading and other forms of sun damage. If you are trying to create your dreamy, tranquil retreat, we recommended looking for polypropylene, it can sometimes mimic the soft texture and similar feel to some soft indoor rugs.
Can you wash them?
Rugs that are designed for the outdoors are generally sturdy enough to remain outside all year round. But keep in mind they do need some TLC. A quick vacuum over can avoid dust and debris settling into the fibers. Or alternatively, outdoor rugs can do with a hose down with some mild soap which will keep it looking like new for years to come!
Are they mould resistant?
In short yes, outdoor rugs are typically made of out materials that resist against mold and mildew – but this does not make them mould proof. Ït is recommended to dry out your rug especially after cleaning and heavy downfalls of rain – to prevent any excessive moisture being trapped underneath.
Can I use an outdoor rug inside?
Indoor – Outdoor rugs are great option for interiors if you are looking for something for a high traffic area and or something that is super easy to spot clean – think muddy boots in your mudroom or messy spills under the dining table 🙂
Lastly, how do I know what size of rug I need?
It depends on the overall feel of the space you are wanting to create. Over sized rugs are very effective in grounding your outdoor furniture setting and creating a soft, calm and relaxing feel. If being used under a dining set, ensuring it is large enough for chairs to pull in and out and not get caught is a great thing to think about! Small rugs can act as a statement piece, so have some fun with it! A fresh pop of colour to tie the space together, or a fun texture can can add some serious personality to your outdoor setting.
