Bathroom Planning – What Should be on Your Checklist

White Bathroom

A bathroom can be much more than simply the room where you brush your teeth or wash your face. Although it must be functional, it can also be an indulgent place that is an oasis of calm. In order to create the perfect place to wind down, you need to focus on finding the right bathroom design to suit your needs.

Before you embark upon the renovation route, you need to decide how much you intend to spend on giving your bathroom a facelift. Bathrooms are one of the most expensive rooms in the house to create and renovate as you need input from so many specialist trades, including plumbers, electricians, water proofers, carpenters and tilers. Once you have decided on a budget, you need to try to stick to it. Do not get carried away with spending large sums of money on taps or shower fittings unless you know you can afford it.

You also need to decide what you want out of your new bathroom. If you are a young family then it needs to be practical and safe, however, retired couples might choose a simple design which will help them to move around the room as they get older. Storage is another key thing to consider as you will be surprised at the amount of space toiletries take up, especially if you have a couple of teenagers in the house.

The design of your bathroom might also depend on the size of the room you have. But having a small bathroom does not always mean you have to compromise. There are products out there which have been specifically designed to make the maximum use of the space, such as corner basins or back-to-wall toilets. If you do have a small bathroom, try and utilise some of the clever techniques that can help make a room appear bigger, such as bright lighting, large mirrors and reflective flooring.

If you are completely remodelling the bathroom, then you must take into consideration the plumbing before deciding where showers and bathtubs can go. Relaying or moving pipes will massively impact on your budget, so it is worth trying to reuse whatever you currently have in place.
