Colour Study – Pantone Colour of the Year 2023 ‘Viva Magenta’

  • News

Pantone Colour of 2023

Pantone colour of the year for 2023 is Viva Magenta and we couldn’t be more excited to see such a bold statement colour represent what we hope will be a year full of vibrant celebration!

According to Pantone, Viva Magenta “vibrates with vim and vigour. It is a shade rooted in nature, descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating colour whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.”

While it’s possible to create an exact match to Pantone Viva Magenta – we’re feeling the vibes from all things magenta, so we’ve collated some tonal inspiration and hope that 2023 fills you with the same ‘vim and vigour’.

So here’s some ideas on how you can bring this colour into your interiors –

THROUGH PAINT

Resene ‘Bombshell’ and Porters Paints ‘Medieval’ are a close colour match – both bold and vibrant whilst having an earthiness that we’d love to see used in interiors this year. Whether it’s through joinery, paint features on your walls, ceilings, doors or architraves, or through your styling!

THROUGH ART

Art is a great way to pull statement colours into your interiors.  Without having to necessarily ‘match’ with the rest of your interior, art can transform the mood and feeling of a space. Either acting as a focal point, or a backdrop for the rest of the space! Below are some of the pieces we are loving at the moment, that combine vibrant magenta, with some earthier mustards, olive greens and lilacs.

THROUGH TEXTILES

Textiles can be another way to pull in a statement colour like magenta for maximum impact.  Create classic, perfectly balanced interiors by using these bright magenta colour pops in combination with a more restrained palette to infuse individuality. If you are going to make a statement, why not go all the way with the 100% mohair we have picked out from Kvadrat’s Sahco collection (right) or a textured feel with a quilted velvet upholstery feature.

THROUGH RUGS

As Greg Natale’s book title alludes, his interiors are a carefully curated construct of layers to create spaces that almost feels like they have been there forever, somehow suspended in time waiting to be discovered.  This is perfectly visualised in his Riverfront House, combining a bold rug that directly links in with the fun velvet colourways on the mustard sofa and magenta-esque armchairs.

We also love this rug designed by Gavin Harris, using different hues of magenta with a subtle muted teal to tie the molecule motif together. While the colour is bold, the design possibilities are endless.  With the option to further enhance the magenta by concentrating more magenta in the space, or to combine a cool pallet of greys and blue greens to let the space infuse a gentler atmosphere.

THROUGH A SINGLAR STATEMENT PIECE

Of course, if the thought of using such a strong colour in your everyday space is a little terrifying, there is always the option to dip your toe in the water and start small.  You will be surprised at how small injections of colour can transform even the largest of rooms.  We love the way these statement armchairs stand in the room on their own – with no need for over styling or overcomplicating the impact they hold.

THROUGH TILES

If you are looking for something a little more ‘all in’ when it comes to applying colour to your interiors, look no further than YSG Studio’s latest project ‘Home and Away’.  This divine bathroom infused with hues of pink is dramatic, while still maintaining a sense of calm.  This palette is a perfect example of what Viva Magenta can emulate in 2023.  Subtle and strong, earthy and vibrant.  If you are looking for a little more tile inspiration we found some great options for you to add a little vim and vigour into your next project!!
